A commonly seen carte de visite of a canary-eating cat from the late 1800s first made in Pittsburgh and later adapted for postcards in the early 1900s. The phrase refers to self-satisfied, smug people. Fat cats? Seems quite modern in its sentiment. Not a nice cat, yet I hear from cat lovers there is no such thing as a bad cat.
