ST SEBASTIANS VERY BAD BIG DAY
This is 7x5 digital work in multiples of ten each signed and on paper.
The 16th century surgeon Hans von Gersdorff published his Field Book of Surgery in 1517. The black and white woodcuts in it were by Hans Wechtlin including this source of my inspiration, The Wound-Man which is now in the Wellcome Collection. Gashed, cut, struck and stabbed by every imaginable weapon (St. Sebastian only had arrows to worry about for gawd's sake.) The Wound-Man illustrated possibilities that might be encountered in surgery, a newer field then. It's one of the first works to show how a cannon ball effects a victim hit by one.
"Death is nigh," it says in the book, "I hope that God will stand by me and grant me Gersdorffâs surgery."
I saw the W-M as a sort of hyper St. Sebastian. The whole nightmarish image is a symbol of the modern world under attack from all sides. Not just humans, but the natural world as well. Butterflies included. What do I worry about most? Don't even ask. In various sizes on Artspan(peterjketchum.com) and on stuff in our shop on Redbubble. https://www.redbubble.com/people/ketchumart/shop.
