SLAM DUNK: A SHORT HISTORY OF WOMENS BASKETBALL
SLAM DUNK: A SHORT HISTORY OF WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: THEN NOW SLAM DUNK is an an 8x10 limited edition, signed print. It’s about the then and the now of basketball, the WNBA being a slam dunk now. The print was made adapting a fruit label for Basketball Brand Lemons of the College Heights Orange & Lemon ASS'N, Claremont, California.
The players’ hair and uniforms suggest late 1920s or early ‘30s. I added the inset on the right showing players from the l890s who were part of the cover illustration for “A Century of Women's Basketball: From Frailty to Final Four.” The winner of the first NCAA final four was LouisianaTech.
On the left of the label I inset a manipulated cabinet card of players from a 1928 team. Note the 1928 on the basketball, a common method of dating in vintage basketball pictures.
The WNBA began play in 1997 with eight teams. The first eight had names like the Charlotte Sting, Cleveland Rockers, and the L.A. Sparks. Zap to any suggestion of frailty! See more of my work on peterjketchum.com.
